Effective March 23, 2024, the Australian government has implemented new English language requirements for student (subclass 500) and Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visas. These changes aim to enhance international students' educational experiences and prepare them for potential careers in Australia and form part of the Australian Government’s Migration Strategy released on 11 December 2023.
What's New?
Temporary Graduate Visas (Subclass 485):
The minimum IELTS score (or equivalent) increases from 6.0 to 6.5, with a minimum of 5.5 in each section (reading, writing, speaking, listening).
The test validity window shortens from 3 years to 1 year. Applicants must now have an English test completed within the year before applying. Student Visas (Subclass 500):
The minimum IELTS score (or equivalent) increases from 5.5 to 6.0.
The minimum score for packaged ELICOS courses increases from 4.5 to 5.0. (No change for students taking only ELICOS.)
Students in university foundation/pathway programs with reputable English language training will still require an IELTS of 5.5 (or equivalent).
The score requirement for VET and higher education students taking packaged ELICOS courses aligns with their main course requirements, ensuring a smooth transition.
Overall, these changes aim to ensure students have the necessary English proficiency to succeed in their studies and potentially future careers in Australia.
