Big Changes to Vetassess Skill Assessments for Trade Occupations: Are You Ready?

Attention all skilled tradespeople aiming to migrate to Australia! From April 23, 2024, Vetassess, the official skills assessment authority, has implemented significant changes to the assessment process for trade occupations.

This blog will unpack these changes and guide you through the new application procedures.

What's New?

Previously, the Pathway 1 assessment process for most trades involved a single step. Now, for most occupations, it's a three-stage journey:

  1. Assessment-Ready Application: Vetassess will only accept your application fee once they confirm you've submitted all the required documents. Ensure your paperwork is complete and accurate to avoid delays.

  2. Stage 2: Demonstrating Your Skills This stage gets more hands-on: Video Demonstration: You'll need to create a video showcasing your skills relevant to your nominated trade occupation. Australian Industry Standards Online Assessment:  Prepare to complete an online assessment based on Australian industry standards for your trade.

  3. Stage 3: Technical Interview Once the online assessment is successfully completed and video evidence requirements are met, we will be able to book your technical interview.  The interview will be conducted either over the internet or face-to-face at one of Vetassess's assessment venues. It will take about two hours.

Exceptions to the New Process:

The new three-stage process applies to most trade occupations. However, a few exceptions, including Airconditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic, Electrician (General), Electrician (Special Class), and Plumber (General), will continue with the previous one-stage assessment.

Why the Changes?

The Australian government aims to ensure all skilled migrants possess the necessary qualifications and practical abilities to thrive in the Australian workforce. These changes aim to create a more robust skills assessment process.
