Navigating the Maze: A Guide to Parent Visas in Australia

Updated: Jul 17, 2024

Australia is a land of opportunity, and many people dream of reuniting with their families there. If you're an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you might be considering sponsoring your parents to join you. But with various Parent visa options available, the process can seem daunting. Fear not! This blog will be your guide through the maze of Australian Parent visas.

The Visa Choices:

Australia offers three main pathways for Parent visas:

  • Subclass 103 Parent Visa: This is the permanent visa stream, allowing your parents to live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely. It's a cost-effective option, but processing times can be lengthy due to high demand.

  • Subclass 804 Aged Parent Visa: This permanent visa lets an aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay in Australia. Be prepared for lengthy waits due to high demand. Your parent must be of pension age to be eligible to apply.

  • Contributory Parent visas (Subclasses 143 & 173): This is a two-step process. First, you apply for a temporary Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (Subclass 173). After a set period, your parents can apply for the permanent Contributory Parent visa (Subclass 143). This stream generally has faster processing times but comes with a higher financial cost.

An Additional Option:

  • Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (Subclass 870): This visa allows your parents to visit Australia for extended periods (up to three or five years at a time). It's a good option if you don't meet the balance of family requirements for permanent visas or if you'd like more time before committing to permanent residency. However, it doesn't grant work rights or access to Medicare.

Meeting the Requirements:

Before diving in, ensure you and your parents meet the eligibility criteria. This includes:

  • Balance of Family Test: You must have at least half of your siblings permanently settled in Australia (excluding those applying with you).

  • Financial Requirements: As the sponsor, you'll need to demonstrate sufficient income to support your parents.

  • Health Requirements: Your parents will need to undergo health checks.

The Application Process:

The application process can involve various forms, police checks, and character references. Consider seeking professional guidance from a migration agent to ensure a smooth application.

Key Considerations:

  • Processing Times: Be prepared for waiting times, especially with the Subclass 103 visa.

  • Costs: Factor in application fees, health checks, and potential migration agent fees.

  • Balance of Family: Ensure you meet this requirement before applying for permanent residency.

Reuniting with family is a beautiful goal. By understanding the Parent visa options in Australia, you can make informed decisions and navigate the process with greater ease.
