Updated English Language Test Requirements for Australia Visa Applications in 2025

Updated English Language Test 2025

Today, August 7, 2025, marks a significant day for anyone planning to work, study, or live in Australia. The Department of Home Affairs has officially updated its list of accepted English language tests and their required scores for various visa applications.

These changes are designed to ensure consistency across different test providers and offer applicants more flexibility. If you're in the process of applying for an Australian visa, here’s what you need to know.

What's Changing?

The new policy introduced three new English language tests that are now accepted by the Department of Home Affairs. These new options give you more choices for proving your English proficiency.

In addition to the new tests, the department has also revised the minimum score requirements for some of the existing approved tests. This means that if you've already taken a test, you'll need to check the new score requirements to ensure your results are still valid for your specific visa subclass.

Key Details to Remember

  • Validity of Old Tests: If you took an English test on or before August 6, 2025, don't worry—your results are not immediately invalid. You can still use these results for visa purposes for a period of up to three years from your test date, depending on the visa subclass you're applying for. This transitional period provides a valuable window for those who have recently taken a test.

  • Secure Test Centres: A crucial point to remember is that only tests taken at approved, secure test centres will be accepted. The Department of Home Affairs does not currently approve at-home or online test results for Australian visa applications.

  • Check Your Visa Subclass: The specific English language requirements can vary significantly between different visa subclasses. It is essential to check the official Department of Home Affairs website for the detailed requirements of the visa you are pursuing.

New and Revised Tests

For those taking a test on or after August 7, 2025, the new rules apply. The new tests now accepted are CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic, and the Michigan English Test (MET).

Score thresholds for other tests like PTE Academic, C1 Advanced, and TOEFL iBT have also been adjusted to align with the new framework. For example, some of the new requirements for the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa have increased. Additionally, note that the Cambridge C1 Advanced test is no longer accepted for the Vocational English requirement.

What Should You Do Now?

If you are planning to apply for an Australian visa, or have an application in progress, it's critical to:

  1. Verify the requirements for your specific visa subclass on the Department of Home Affairs website.

  2. Check if your existing test results meet the new score requirements, especially if they were taken before today's date.

  3. Explore the new testing options if you haven't yet taken a test.

  4. Book your test at an approved, secure testing centre.

Staying informed is the best way to ensure your visa application process goes smoothly. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, always refer to the official sources from the Department of Home Affairs or consult with a MARA Registered Migration Agent.
