Why is the 485 Visa Refused? Common Pitfalls to Avoid in 2026

The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) is a golden ticket for international students to gain work experience in Australia. However, refusal rates have climbed due to stricter 2026 eligibility criteria. At Leading Edge Migration, we’ve identified the top reasons for refusal to help you lodge a "decision-ready" application.

1. Not Meeting the Stricter 2026 English Requirements
One of the most common reasons for a 485 refusal is failing the English proficiency test. As of late 2025/2026, the bar has been raised:
The Score: Most applicants now require an IELTS overall score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or a PTE score of 57 (minimums apply).
The Timing: Your test must be taken within one year of your visa application date (the previous three-year validity no longer applies to the 485).
The Error: Many students apply before they have their results. You must have your English test results in hand on the day you lodge.
2. Missing the "Age 35" Cut-off
A major 2026 update is the reduction of the age limit.
The Rule: Most applicants must be 35 years of age or under at the time of application.
Exceptions: If you are a Masters (Research) or Doctoral (PhD) graduate, or a Hong Kong/British National Overseas passport holder, you may still be eligible up to age 50. Applying at age 36 for a standard stream is a guaranteed refusal.
3. Applying for the Wrong 485 Visa Stream
The 485 visa has been rebranded. Choosing the wrong one is a fatal error:
Post-Higher Education Work Stream: For those with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD.
Post-Vocational Education Work Stream: For those with trade qualifications or diplomas (requires a Skills Assessment).
The Trap: If you apply for the Post-Higher stream with a Vocational Diploma, the Department will refuse the application rather than "switching" it for you.
4. Failing the Australian Study Requirement (ASR)
The "Two-Year Study" rule remains a hurdle. To pass, your course must:
Be CRICOS-registered.
Consist of at least 92 weeks of registered study.
Have been completed in no less than 16 calendar months while physically in Australia.
Note: Failing a subject and extending your stay doesn't count toward the 92-week requirement—only the registered CRICOS duration counts.
5. "Time of Lodgement" Document Errors
The 485 visa is "evidence-heavy" at the moment of submission. You cannot "fix it later." Common missing items include:
AFP Check Receipt: You must apply for your Australian Federal Police (AFP) check before you click submit and include the receipt.
Health Insurance (OVHC): You must switch from OSHC (Student) to OVHC (Visitor/Graduate) insurance before applying. Providing an OSHC certificate can lead to immediate refusal.
The Completion Letter: You must apply within 6 months of the date on your official Completion Letter, not your graduation ceremony date.
